Description
A poetry collection of students from Wake County Title 1 schools. Poetry has a mixed reputation in the literary world. Many adults think back to high school tests on Shakespeare and Wordsworth, and dismiss this genre as too archaic, too formal, too convoluted to be of any practical use to their children. Others think of Dr. Seuss and Mother Goose, and wonder how sing-song, nonsense nursery rhymes can possibly help a child become a more confident, fluid reader and writer. Even as the world around them grows faster, smarter, and more efficient, children grow to match their environment. Literacy is a fundamental building block to ensure every child has the knowledge and skill to navigate new situations, opportunities, and challenges along their path to success. We feel strongly that by encouraging children to find joy and merit in poetry, we are sharing with them one of the keys to learning and achieving whatever goals they set for themselves: You can work hard, have fun, learn new things, and be creative—ALL AT THE SAME TIME!
We hope you enjoy this collection of poems from the talented young poets of Wake County Schools.
